Senior European leaders expressed their support for Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky following US President Donald Trump's recent call for his removal from office.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said, following a telephone conversation with Zelensky, that the Ukrainian president "is leading his people's struggle for freedom," assuring him of her full support.

For his part, French President Emmanuel Macron said: “France will continue to stand by Ukraine and President Zelensky,” noting that he also spoke with the Ukrainian president on Sunday.

These contacts came after new tensions between Trump and Zelensky, as the US President said on Saturday that his Ukrainian counterpart had repeatedly had the opportunity to end the war with Russia, but he chose not to do so.

In London, British Prime Minister Andy Burnham announced his country's support for Trump's call for a sustainable ceasefire in the energy sector between Russia and Ukraine, saying in a post on the "X" platform that Britain strongly supports the start of the truce immediately.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney's office also announced that Canada supports an energy ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine, noting that Carney informed Trump of his support for this step during a phone call between them on Sunday.
