Lawyers for Krista Pike, who survived two attempts at execution by lethal injection in a Tennessee prison, said on Tuesday that she has "regained consciousness and is able to speak," six days after her execution attempt failed in an unprecedented incident.
Her lawyers stated in a statement, "Contrary to all expectations, Krista Pike is conscious and able to speak and continues to receive vital medical care."
Krista Pike, 50, who was supposed to be the first woman executed in over two hundred years in the southern state of Tennessee, survived on Wednesday evening a lethal injection of two fatal doses of pentobarbital, a powerful barbiturate.
Since then, she has been in critical condition and connected to a ventilator, according to the brief information provided by her lawyers, who have not been allowed to visit her in the hospital.
Her lawyers added in the statement, "We continue to urge the Governor of Tennessee to commute her sentence to life in prison without the possibility of parole," reminding of the horrific forms of violence, especially sexual violence, that Krista Pike has suffered since childhood, and of her spending "nearly 30 years in solitary confinement" in the "death row unit."
Pike was sentenced to death for killing Colin Slimmer (19 years old) in 1995 when she was eighteen years old.
The failed execution attempt of Krista Pike on Wednesday evening has reignited the debate over this punishment in the United States.
Governor Bill Lee, who ordered a halt to executions in the state on Thursday and an independent investigation into the failed execution of Pike, announced on Saturday his acceptance of the resignation of the head of the Tennessee Department of Corrections.
