U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Monday that the United States will provide assistance to Russia following the death of an employee at a laboratory affiliated with the Research Institute of Plague in Siberia.
Trump added to reporters as he left the White House heading to Nebraska that the outbreak is "a big problem for Russia," according to Reuters.
He also said, "Well, I hate to see them suffering from it... It's a tough disease," adding that the United States will do what it can to help Russia.
Meanwhile, Trump described Russian President Vladimir Putin as someone he can work with, despite the tensions arising from the war in Ukraine. He confirmed, "We will help... any party that has a problem of this kind... We will always help."
This came after an employee at a laboratory affiliated with the plague research institute in Siberia fell ill and died under undisclosed circumstances, prompting authorities to impose quarantine on dozens of people and sending the head of the Russian health oversight agency to the Irkutsk region.
While the death raised public health concerns on social media, authorities announced on Monday that the situation is under control.
