The "Emmy" Awards Officially End the Era of Traditional Television Broadcasting

-The "Emmy" Awards are moving to be broadcast via Amazon's Prime Video platform, thus ending decades of rotation among traditional television networks. Under a 6-year agreement announced on Tuesday, the "Emmy" Awards will be exclusively broadcast on Prime Video starting September 2027.

Viewers will be able to watch it for free, without the need for a subscription. This agreement replaces the arrangement where ABC, CBS, Fox, and NBC took turns broadcasting the largest television awards ceremony.

This comes following last year's announcement of the Oscars moving from ABC to YouTube starting in 2029. Chris Abrego, Chairman of the Television Academy, stated: "Television has never been more global than it is today, and the Emmy Awards should be a celebration that the whole world participates in.

Now, Prime Video audiences in over 200 countries will be able to watch the Emmy Awards live without the need for a subscription." This move ends an era of traditional television broadcasting that has lasted since 1955, when NBC began broadcasting the Emmy Awards nationally. The network also aired this year's Emmy Awards ceremony, which was the last under the periodic agreement.

Final viewership figures for the 2026 Emmy Awards ceremony showed that the number of viewers reached 6.8 million, a decrease of 10% from the previous year. Amazon and the Television Academy announced that the partnership will include new ways for audiences to engage with the ceremony throughout the year, without going into details about these plans.

This agreement gives Prime Video another prominent live event as streaming platforms compete to attract viewers. In addition to YouTube's agreement for the Oscars ceremony, Disney will begin streaming the Grammy Awards through ABC, Hulu, and Disney+ starting next year.
