- The Portuguese star Cristiano Ronaldo issued a statement via his Instagram account on Tuesday, revealing the reasons for his departure from the national team's camp during the current international break. Ronaldo stated that the head coach of the Portugal national team, Jorge Jesus, "broke his promises" regarding his participation in the UEFA Nations League matches.
The 41-year-old player explained that he met with Jesus after the first match against Norway, indicating that the meeting was "transparent, and they agreed that the coach would repeat what he told the player privately in a press conference." The player continued that they "agreed that the coach would say he had presented a previous plan regarding the number of minutes he would play during the international break and it was accepted," and the Portuguese star confirmed that he did not question his choices and was "exemplary, loyal, and professional."
He mentioned that he and Jesus "agreed that the coach would say he made a mistake" after asking him to warm up during the first match against Norway without actually including him, and to justify the position of the Al Nassr player after he did not greet the fans following the final whistle of that match. Ronaldo stated that Jesus "broke his promises," clarifying: "The conference, as is known, had nothing to do with our meeting; I heard expressions and aggression that I believe I did not deserve, a condescending attitude that I had never seen from him even indirectly, in a meeting prior to the press conference."
He continued: "I decided to leave the camp without waiting for any other unfulfilled promises; for me, the truth remains the most important thing in the relationship between people, no matter how painful it is, tell me the truth." He added: "I have never interfered at any moment in any technical or tactical decision of any coach or director of a national team during nearly 25 years of playing football... I respect the decision, and when they break their promise to me, I feel that my place is not here."
He concluded: "I apologize to my teammates in the national team for leaving the camp, despite the complete breach of promises by the coach; I should not have done that, the responsibility lies entirely with me," noting that he "deserves to receive a penalty for this act, especially since he is the team captain."
