Recent satellite images published through Google Maps have revealed the extent of the destruction caused by the Israeli war on the Gaza Strip. They showed the complete disappearance of entire residential neighborhoods and the transformation of vast urban areas into layers of rubble, while damaged buildings continue to collapse on their occupants despite the ceasefire being in effect.

The recent updates also reflected a radical change in the urban landscape of the sector. The destruction was not limited to individual buildings but extended to erase entire residential complexes, leaving empty spaces in areas that were densely populated until recently.

In a related context, the latest update from the official Israeli government mapping site (govmap.gov.il) revealed high-resolution aerial images of the northern Gaza Strip without the usual censorship, leading to the disclosure of 11 bases and military sites of the Israeli army within the buffer zone.

These images released for the year 2025 differ from the usual security policy followed by the Israeli authorities, which involves obscuring aerial plans for the Gaza Strip and sensitive military bases. The removal of the obscurity provides, for the first time, high-resolution images of the northern sector showing a massive amount of destruction in Palestinian towns, as well as troop movements, which compensates for the lack of high-resolution satellite images provided by other global platforms for this specific area, according to the Times of Israel.

Meanwhile, the Israeli authorities rushed to delete the images and reimpose censorship and obscurity as soon as the matter was discovered by accounts specialized in open-source intelligence, to prevent the exploitation of this high-resolution data in tracking military movements and bases that are usually prohibited for security reasons.

A survey conducted by the United Nations Satellite Center showed that about 201,290 buildings, equivalent to 82% of the total facilities in the sector, had been damaged as of June 16, 2026.

The assessment also clarified that this toll includes 134,422 completely destroyed buildings, 13,848 facilities that suffered severe damage, 28,096 buildings that sustained moderate damage, in addition to 24,924 facilities likely to have been affected. According to the same assessment, approximately 328,627 housing units were damaged.

In this context, a report issued by the UN Special Rapporteur on the right to adequate housing in February stated that more than 200,000 tons of explosives were dropped on the Gaza Strip over a period of about two years.

This comes as the repercussions of the destruction continue to threaten the lives of Palestinians even after the ceasefire took effect on October 10, 2025. Since the agreement was implemented, dozens of damaged buildings have collapsed on their residents, while the population faces a severe shortage of shelters amid ongoing restrictions on the entry of temporary housing units, including prefabricated houses known as caravans.

The danger is no longer limited to buildings that have been completely destroyed, as the attacks have left thousands of facilities cracked or severely damaged, increasing the likelihood of their collapse, especially when exposed to rain, wind, and weather fluctuations.

Since October 8, 2023, the Israeli war on the Gaza Strip has resulted in the deaths of more than 74,000 Palestinians and injured over 175,000 others, while about 90% of the infrastructure has been destroyed or damaged.
