US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who is visiting Samarkand, Uzbekistan as part of a quick tour of Central and South Asia, reiterated that his country has not stopped exchanging intelligence information with Ukraine.
He also explained in press statements from the historical center of Samarkand, the city that was an important stop on the Silk Road, that US President Donald Trump suspended sanctions on Russia for 60 days because he wants to know whether there is a chance for the success of the currently ongoing talks.
In addition, he considered that "no one achieves victory in the Ukraine war. People are dying every day, and sites are being bombed and destroyed daily." He pointed out the need for Ukraine and Russia to focus on ending the ongoing war between them.
In response to a question about the possibility of holding a meeting between the US President, his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, and his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping, to negotiate an end to the conflict that has been going on in Ukraine for four years, Rubio said, “There is talk about holding a meeting... I do not know if it has been finally agreed upon, but the president was clear that he wants to end the war between Ukraine and Russia.”
A former Russian intelligence officer reported yesterday that Putin proposed holding a summit next month with Trump and Xi to negotiate an end to the Ukrainian conflict. He explained that Putin's proposal came during a phone call that took place on October 9 with Trump, which also resulted in an agreement for the United States to purchase Russian diesel and facilitate its sale on the global market, according to the Wall Street Journal.
This came after the US President renewed his criticism of his Ukrainian counterpart, Volodymyr Zelensky, considering that he does not want peace. Trump wrote on his platform, Truth Social, yesterday evening, “My decision regarding Russia is very simple. I am in the midst of negotiating peace in the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine, and I do not want to do anything that would foolishly push Moscow away from the negotiating table.”
He also added, "Zelensky does not care, and frankly, with all the money that Europe gives him and what (former US President) deceitful Joe Biden gave him in the past, he does not want to end this war, and most likely he never wanted that at all."
It is noteworthy that last Friday, Trump signed an executive order suspending sanctions and customs duties targeting Russia’s oil revenues, in a move that was met with Ukrainian condemnation. Trump's move came after he agreed with his Russian counterpart to resume Russian diesel exports to American and global markets in exchange for easing American sanctions.
