Bulgarian authorities and Austrian Airlines said that a flight belonging to the company, heading from Tel Aviv to Vienna, made an emergency landing in Sofia, the capital of Bulgaria, on Sunday, after a bomb threat was reported on board. Austrian Airlines said in a statement that flight number OS82 landed safely at 8:42 pm local time in Sofia.
She added that the Airbus A320 plane was carrying 51 passengers and 6 crew members. The crew reported receiving the threat near the Romanian border and decided to make an emergency landing in Sofia, according to the Bulgarian Ministry of Tourism.
The ministry added that a Bulgarian Air Force fighter plane accompanied the plane until it landed. Austrian Airlines indicated, "Once the inspection of the aircraft is completed, alternative flights will be booked for passengers as soon as possible."
Last month, the co-pilot allegedly assaulted the pilot on a Flydubai flight bound for Israel and appeared to attempt to shoot down the plane, causing it to plummet 20,000 feet within minutes, before making an emergency landing in Saudi Arabia. A preliminary investigation found that the pilot accused of trying to hijack the Flydubai plane was planning to crash it into Ben Gurion Airport near Tel Aviv, and that he was inspired by the September 11 attacks.
