Tel Aviv - Ofoq News - Today, Wednesday, members of the Israeli army began casting their votes in the general elections for the Knesset, before the official polling date scheduled for October 27, as part of electoral arrangements aimed at enabling soldiers deployed in bases and areas of operations to participate in the vote, in conjunction with the continued Israeli military deployment on several fronts.
Haaretz newspaper reported that the Israeli army deployed about 850 polling stations in its various locations, an increase of nearly 100 compared to the previous elections, at a time when thousands of soldiers are still deployed in the Gaza Strip, Lebanon and Syria.
The Israeli army announced the start of the voting process in a statement, in which it said: “From Mount Hermon to Eilat, and from Lebanon and Syria to the Gaza Strip, soldiers and commanders of the Israeli army began voting,” referring to the extension of the voting process to include military personnel present in various areas of deployment.
Israeli civilians are scheduled to go to the polls on the official election date, October 27, while the army allows its members to cast their votes during the period designated for military voting, provided that the possibility of voting continues until the polls close on the official election day.
These arrangements aim to ensure the participation of the military in the electoral process without prejudice to their military duties, especially in light of the presence of Israeli forces in bases and areas of operations that require continued field readiness.
Electoral procedures include the establishment of fixed and mobile polling stations, allowing soldiers and commanders to vote at their deployment locations, taking into account the security and operational requirements imposed by the nature of the tasks assigned to them.
This step comes in light of the continued Israeli military deployment on multiple fronts, which presents the military institution with the challenge of organizing the participation of its personnel in the elections, in parallel with ensuring the continuation of field operations and missions.
The army's announcement did not include any reference to changing the military plans related to the areas of troop deployment, as it was limited to clarifying the voting arrangements and mechanisms for enabling soldiers to exercise their electoral right.
The Israeli general elections are taking place in light of a political and security landscape in which internal issues overlap with the repercussions of war and military operations on several fronts, in addition to disputes related to the management of the Palestinian file, relations with the United States, and the future of security arrangements in the region.
In this context, The Times of Israel indicated that the Israeli army represents one of the pivotal files in the electoral race, in light of the continued deployment of its forces in the Gaza Strip, Lebanon and Syria, as well as the internal debate regarding the security failures that preceded the attack on October 7, 2023, and the political and military accountability for its repercussions.
The newspaper added that the burdens of military service and service in the reserve forces also fall within the issues related to the army’s role in the internal debate during the elections, which reflects the overlap of security and military considerations with the political issues presented to Israeli voters.
