Washington - Ofoq News - Elon Musk, on Thursday, October 15, revealed an innovative version of the Tesla Roadster, capable of performing acrobatic movements in the air thanks to propellers and thrusters that appear to have come out of science fiction films.
“You're going to see crazy things tonight,” Musk said during the show, which was held in a controlled environment inside the SpaceX rocket testing facility near Waco, Texas.
During the show, the electric sports car climbed a slope, then hovered upside down for a moment in the air, before jumping and landing, using SpaceX's cold gas thrusters to reduce the speed of its descent.
In another part, the car jumped over several lined up vehicles and flipped in the air, before landing safely in a cloud of white smoke.
“It turns out that the future already has flying cars,” Musk wrote shortly after the presentation on the X platform.
Musk confirmed that this version is the one that will actually run on the roads, noting its ability to accelerate from zero to 60 miles per hour within one second (96 kilometers per hour in less than a second). Production is expected to begin in 2028, and the price of the car has not yet been determined.
The new Tesla Roadster comes with four seats and a four-wheel drive system, with a torque of 10,000 Newton metres, and a top speed exceeding 250 miles per hour. The range is 620 miles, approximately 998 km, (the distance that the car can travel on a single battery charge before needing to recharge), which is a number that exceeds what most electric cars offer today.
The standard model can be reserved for a payment of $50,000, while upgrading to the “thrust version” requires an additional payment of $245,000, in exchange for rear cold gas thrusters and a fan system that increases pressure on the car from below, reducing the acceleration time from zero to 60 miles per hour to less than a second. The "Rocket Version", available by invitation only, comes with a single seat and circumferential thrusters that allow for real flight, but it is not legal for road use.
