Ramallah - Ofoq News - The “New Path” list, headed by Samer Al-Singlawi, called on President Mahmoud Abbas to commit to holding the Legislative Council elections on the scheduled date of November 28, 2026, stressing that the right of the Palestinian people to choose their representatives should not remain suspended under any circumstances, and that the elections represent a national entitlement to strengthen confidence in institutions and renew legitimacy.
The appeal was as follows
Keep the elections on time... and keep hope alive
An appeal to hold Legislative Council elections on November 28, 2026
Dear President Mahmoud Abbas
We address you with respect, appreciation and love, bringing to you the voice of a people who have waited twenty years to choose their representatives, and the voice of the citizens who registered their names in preparation for these elections, and whose percentage reached about 88% of those with the right to vote. We convey to you the voice of 9,200 citizens, both male and female, who signed in support of the New Path list, which was submitted for registration on nine lists, in response to your presidential decree and confidence in its timing.
Mr. President
We realize the amount of responsibility you bear, and we know that there are internal pressures to postpone the elections. But we implore you to hear the voice of those who have waited so long, and to give their will the weight it deserves when making a decision
The conditions in Gaza, the complexities of Jerusalem, and the situations in the West Bank are truly dire. But who can guarantee that it will improve after months or years? The 2021 elections have been postponed, and more than five years have passed during which conditions have become worse and more complex. Linking elections to improving conditions may turn waiting into a permanent deprivation of the right to choose
These conditions make renewed legitimacy and accountability even more urgent. In Gaza, families are preparing to enter their third winter in plastic tents, and in the West Bank, families are living under the threat of settler attacks and loss of sources of livelihood, and employees are waiting for their full and on-time salaries. These people need institutions that respond to them, and a voice that influences the decisions that determine their lives
As for the Israeli obstacles, they must be confronted by all available political, diplomatic and practical means. The Election Commission has experience and field crews on which it can be built. We appeal to you to enable it to present its solutions and implement its arrangements, and to mobilize Arab and international support to protect the Palestinians’ right to vote, especially in Jerusalem and the Gaza Strip.
Waiting for the results of the Israeli or American elections does not guarantee a breakthrough. Elected Palestinian institutions, based on a renewed popular mandate, give us a stronger position vis-à-vis any Israeli government or US administration, and strengthen our ability to demand our rights, our withheld funds, and the support our people need.
If some factions were not ready, new and independent lists were able, within weeks and with limited capabilities, to collect signatures, prepare, and apply for registration. We respect the history of the factions and want to share them, but the people’s right to elections should not remain dependent on the readiness of any party
Mr. President
Since your decree was issued, thousands of members and supporters have been engaged in preparing for these elections. We painstakingly gathered personal resources, built teams, knocked on doors, and trusted that the deadline you set would be respected. Behind every signature is a citizen who chose to participate peacefully and believed that his voice could make a difference
According to data from the Central Elections Commission, about 1.57 million Palestinian men and women, representing 53% of those with the right to vote, are under the age of 38, and due to their age did not have the opportunity to participate in the last legislative elections in 2006.
An entire generation has grown up, studied, worked, and raised families, and is still waiting for its first opportunity to choose its representatives in the Legislative Council
We appeal to you in the name of this generation, and in the name of our people who deserve to choose their future, to protect the date you have set. Holding elections on time enhances confidence in our institutions, confirms the seriousness of reform, and gives the friends of Palestine a stronger argument to support it.
You can make November 28, 2026 a day to restore hope and confidence, and it will be recorded for you that you issued the decree, protected its implementation, and enabled an entire generation to make its voice heard.
Mr. President, set the date and protect our people’s right to choose
