On iPhones, these points mean the following

- Green dot in the status bar: Its appearance means that an application is using only the camera, or both the camera and microphone.

- Orange dot in the status bar: Its appearance means that an application is using the microphone.

This is a way to inform users that the camera is on or that the microphone is recording sound, alerting them if an app is using these devices unexpectedly or secretly.

On Android devices, the color-coded dots system is very similar since version 12 of the operating system. A green dot in the upper-right corner of the screen indicates that one of the following is currently in use:

- Camera and microphone together.

The blue dot on the right side of the screen indicates that an app is accessing location data. This point is a completely new addition to the Android 16 system, and it appeared in March 2026.

There is also a white dot that sometimes appears near the middle of the top edge of the Android phone screen, but it is not related to privacy or data access control.
