Russian airstrikes on several areas in Ukraine, including the capital Kyiv, resulted in the deaths of eight people on Sunday, as Moscow intensified its attacks on various Ukrainian cities.

Ukrainian Interior Minister Ivan Vyhivskyi announced the death toll on Sunday afternoon, stating that Russian strikes hit a children's center in the city of Sumy in the north of the country, resulting in the deaths of three people, including a 16-year-old girl.

Earlier, Oleh Hryhorov, the governor of the Sumy region, said that three glide bombs fell near a family support center in the area, resulting in the deaths of two people. Sumy has been repeatedly targeted by Russian attacks due to its proximity to the border, while Russia has long claimed it intends to establish a buffer zone in the area.

In Zaporizhzhia in southern Ukraine, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said that three people were killed in overnight airstrikes.

He added that drones struck locations near a kindergarten and a playground in two areas, while other parts of the capital were also damaged.

The Kyiv municipality stated that "the enemy continues to attack Kyiv relentlessly using offensive drones," noting that 16 sites were affected, including 12 homes in the suburbs of the capital, in addition to a warehouse and a production facility.

In the Odessa region in the south of the country, authorities reported that a "large-scale raid" resulted in the death of another person. Regional official Oleg Kiper stated that the Russian raids caused damage to a residential building, a medical facility, a hotel, and a store, in addition to a warehouse used for grain storage.

Zelensky stated on Sunday that Russian forces launched more than 2,200 attack drones on Ukraine over the past week, along with about 1,650 aerial bombs and 38 missiles of various types, noting that a large number of them were ballistic missiles.

He added that the strikes targeted residential areas and "civilian infrastructure" in different parts of the country.

The attacks come a day after Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stated before the United Nations General Assembly that Moscow intends to continue its military campaign "to the end."

In contrast, the Russian Defense Ministry announced on Sunday that Russian forces had taken control of a border village in the Kharkiv region of eastern Ukraine, where Moscow controls several areas.

Russia has not announced the annexation of the Kharkiv region, unlike the regions of Donetsk, Luhansk, Zaporizhia, and Kherson, but it has attacked the area and controlled lands within it since the start of the war.

The Kremlin has repeatedly announced its intention to extend its control over the remaining parts of eastern Ukraine, while the U.S.-led talks to end the war, which began with the outbreak of the war in 2022, have not resulted in any significant breakthrough.
