The Royal Commission for the City of Riyadh signed contracts to purchase 94 new trains to enhance the Riyadh Railway fleet in a first phase, as part of early preparation for future growth in transportation in the capital.
This comes within the framework of the expansion of its destinations and projects, and its hosting of a number of major international events, most notably Expo 2030 Riyadh and the 2034 World Cup. This increases the number of trains in the network from 183 to 277 trains, with the new trains being received in batches starting in 2028.
The new trains contribute to increasing the total capacity of the Riyadh metro network by 60%, by directing additional capacity to the tracks according to the volume of passengers and expected demand, as the capacity increases in the red track by 142%, in the yellow track by 116%, and in the blue track by 60%, in addition to increases in the orange tracks by 27%, and the purple tracks by 16%.
The Riyadh Metro network was designed from the beginning to accommodate larger numbers of trains, and to gradually expand in capacity as usage grows.
The fleet enhancement comes in light of the continuous growth witnessed by the Riyadh Railway network, which has exceeded 300 million passengers since the start of operation, while the average number of passengers during the period from January to September 2026 increased by about 25%, compared to the same period in 2025.
The German companies Siemens and French Alstom are implementing the contracts to enhance the fleet, whose total value is approximately 5.5 billion riyals, and includes an integrated range of works and services related to the project, including the manufacture of trains, their systems and their equipment.
The trains will be received according to the manufacturing stages, then subjected to tests and operational trials before being gradually put into service, according to the readiness of each batch.
This investment is part of the efforts of the Royal Commission for the City of Riyadh to develop the transportation system in the capital in an integrated manner, by focusing on three axes of work that include developing the road network and intersections, the public transportation network, and traffic management. In order to keep pace with the city’s population and urban growth, and enhance the readiness of its infrastructure to meet the future needs of the city of Riyadh.
