A man was executed in Iran after being convicted of killing a policeman by running him over during clashes that took place four years ago, according to what judicial authorities announced on Sunday.
Iran intensified executions against the backdrop of the joint US-Israeli attack on it on February 28 and the anti-government protests at the beginning of this year.
The judiciary's Mizan Online website quoted local prosecutor Arif Akbari as saying, "The death sentence was carried out against the killer of Reza Ehtami, an officer who worked in the emergency unit of the Iranian police."
He pointed to the implementation of the death sentence, which was approved by the Supreme Court after the completion of investigations and trial procedures.
The defendant, who was known in court as “Daniel,” was convicted of the premeditated murder of Reza Ethrami, a lieutenant serving in the law enforcement forces in the southern city of Bandar Abbas.
In 2022, my respect was killed during confrontations between the police and fuel smugglers, after he was run over by a vehicle the accused was driving, according to previous reports published by official media.
Amnesty International says Iran carries out more executions than any other country except China.
Fuel prices in Iran are among the lowest in the world, which leads to the spread of smuggling operations to neighboring countries.
