The European Observatory for the Fight Against Extremism revealed today, Wednesday, an American escalation in confronting the Muslim Brotherhood, represented by the state of Florida's decisive decision against the group and one of its branches in the state on September 29.
The observatory stated in a press release today that the Florida state government classified the Muslim Brotherhood and the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), along with another organization, as local terrorist organizations.
It added that the government included more than 90 foreign terrorist organizations that had previously been classified as such by the federal government in the same list, noting that under this decision, the council and other listed organizations will be prohibited from receiving financial support from local governments and the state government, and scholarships allocated to schools affiliated with them that financially benefit from them will be canceled.
According to the observatory, the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) describes itself as the leading civil rights organization serving the Muslim community in the United States since its establishment in 1994, and it has more than 25 branches across the country, including branches in the cities of Tampa and Sunrise in Broward County, pointing out that documented reports link the council to being one of the branches of the Muslim Brotherhood.
The observatory states that the Muslim Brotherhood and its associated networks in Europe and the United States are among the prominent issues that are receiving increasing attention in security and political discussions, especially regarding funding, advocacy and organizational activities, and the relationships of local associations and institutions.
It confirmed that Washington and several European countries have strengthened monitoring measures on organizations and networks suspected of being linked to the Brotherhood, amid growing discussions about its influence in the social and political spheres.
This interest comes as part of a broader European approach to combat extremism and illicit funding, with ongoing debate about the boundaries between legitimate religious activity and politically-oriented organizational activities.
