In conjunction with the faltering negotiations between Washington and Tehran, the Pakistani army commander, Asim Munir, visited the Iranian capital, Tehran, on Tuesday, to hold discussions with Iranian officials, in a move aimed at reviving mediation efforts.

Munir is scheduled to hold meetings and discussions with Iranian officials, according to Tasnim Agency, explaining that the visit will address Islamabad’s role in mediating between Iran and the United States.

While the Iranian agency did not provide further details regarding the mediation efforts, noting that bilateral cooperation and issues of common interest, in addition to regional developments, will be among the topics of the Pakistani Army Commander’s visit.

The visit comes as Tehran reaffirmed the continuation of a proposal that it had previously conveyed to Washington through mediators, which includes opening the Strait of Hormuz within seven days.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi said, in statements to local media on Sunday, that the proposal is still on the table, adding that the United States’ acceptance of Tehran’s conditions will allow the opening of the Strait within six days, with talks to resume on the seventh day.

Araqchi also accused Washington of obstructing the diplomatic track and causing a threat to the security of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.

On the other hand, US President Donald Trump had previously announced his rejection of the Iranian proposal, saying that he was no longer interested in this issue after the American forces were able, as he put it, to secure navigation and the movement of ships in this vital waterway.

Despite the declared American rejection, the mediators continued their efforts to bring the viewpoints between the two parties closer, seeking to reach an agreement to end the conflict that broke out on February 28, and led to widespread disturbances in shipping traffic through the Strait of Hormuz.

In parallel with diplomatic moves, the United States continues to blockade Iranian ports and intensify economic pressure on Tehran, including imposing additional sanctions, amid continuing disagreement over the conditions necessary to resume negotiations.

The revised Iranian proposal, which was conveyed through mediators, included lifting the US blockade on Iranian ports, releasing Iranian assets frozen abroad, and stopping hostilities on various fronts, in exchange for reopening the Strait of Hormuz to ship traffic.

While these proposals follow the collapse of an initial agreement between the two parties last June, the revised proposal was seen as close to it in a number of its provisions.
