-Canadian writer and classical studies specialist, Anne Carson, whose works combine poetry, prose and essay, and whose themes are inspired by Greek mythology, won the 2026 Nobel Prize in Literature, in recognition of her “daring and innovative works.” The Nobel Committee stated, in a statement, that “Carson’s playful dialogue with the classical heritage has created new forms for contemporary literature.”
The award, which was announced by the Swedish Academy in Stockholm on Thursday, is accompanied by a financial reward of 12 million Swedish krona (equivalent to 1.2 million US dollars). Carson (76 years old) is a prominent researcher in classical studies. She taught at multiple universities in the United States and Canada, and presented distinguished literary works, such as “The Beauty of the Husband,” “An Autobiography of Red: A Novel in Verse,” and “Nox,” and she received critical acclaim thanks to her unique prose and poetic articles and texts, in which the ancient and the modern coexist side by side.
Balancing multiple literary ideas, genres, and forms is a fundamental pillar of her work. “Most of her literary production revolved around the intersection between the linguist’s obsession with words and the poet’s desire to find new meanings,” said Anders Olsson, head of the Nobel Committee for Literature.
