Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman, Zhao Lijian, stated that American officials should be cautious about their conclusions regarding the so-called alleged Chinese invasion of Taiwan.
The Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman commented on the views of some American officials that the likelihood of a "Chinese invasion" of Taiwan before 2028 "is increasingly diminishing": "The American side should implement the important agreements reached during the meeting between the leaders of China and the United States, strictly adhere to the 'One China' principle and the three joint communiqués of the two countries, and handle the Taiwan issue with caution," as reported by the Russian news agency TASS.
Zhao Lijian reiterated that the Taiwan issue is purely an internal matter for China and should be handled by "the Chinese people alone," explaining that this topic "does not allow for the intervention of any external forces."
It is worth noting that Taiwan has enjoyed self-governance since 1949, when remnants of the Kuomintang forces led by Chiang Kai-shek (1887-1975) fled there after their defeat in the Chinese Civil War. Since then, Taipei has retained the flag of the former Republic of China and some of its other characteristics that existed on the mainland before the communists came to power.
According to the official position of Beijing, which is supported by most countries, including Russia, Taiwan is considered one of the regions of the People's Republic of China.
