The vicinity of the Dutch Embassy in Cairo witnessed a protest, during which participants raised Egyptian flags and banners denouncing the Dutch city of The Hague’s hosting of a conference for the “Maidan” movement, which critics accuse of being linked to the Muslim Brotherhood.

Scenes of the protest showed banners written in Arabic, English and Dutch, bearing phrases including “The Netherlands supports terrorism” and “Fuging Brotherhood under the protection of the Dutch authorities,” along with the slogan “Egypt’s embassy is a red line.”

The banners also included demands to hand over members of the Brotherhood to the Egyptian authorities, under the slogan “The Egyptian people want to hand over the Muslim Brotherhood to the authorities,” as well as banners asking about the fate of a person named Ahmed Nasser, which carried the phrase “Where is Ahmed Nasser” in Arabic and English.

The scenes showed images of people, some of them marked with red crosses, as police cars and regular traffic passed in the street surrounding the protest site.

The stand comes against the backdrop of objection to The Hague hosting events related to the Maidan movement, amid criticism regarding the nature of the parties participating in the conference and their political and organizational connections.

The slogans raised by the participants reflect their rejection of what they consider to be providing space for the activities of Egyptian dissidents abroad, and their demand to take measures against people they accuse of belonging to the Brotherhood or to escape prosecution.

The Maidan movement is one of the Egyptian political movements active abroad, and Egyptian media reports say that it includes figures linked to the Muslim Brotherhood. Last July, the movement announced the transfer of its office from Türkiye to Europe, specifically the Dutch city of The Hague.

On September 16, The Hague hosted a conference of Egyptian opposition members abroad, with the participation of the “Maidan” movement and a number of other entities, including the “Egyptian Technocrats” movement, the “Egyptian Hope” party, the Revolutionary Council, and the Center for Egyptian-American Relations.

The conference addressed issues related to the future of political life in Egypt, the system of government, political participation, elections, accountability and the transfer of power.

Participation in the conference sparked criticism in Egyptian media, against the backdrop of accusations of links between some of the participating parties and the Muslim Brotherhood, while the organizers of the conference presented its activities as a space for dialogue regarding the future of Egypt and political reform.
