Iran announced on Saturday the execution of a man convicted of several charges, including shooting at police officers during anti-government protests at the beginning of the year.
Siyavash Jamshidi was accused of targeting security personnel during the protests that erupted in late December due to rising living costs, which quickly turned into widespread anti-government demonstrations peaking on January 8 and 9.
Since then, the number of arrests and executions in Iran has increased, whether related to the war or protests.
The judiciary stated: "Jamshidi was sentenced to death for the crime of moharebeh (waging war against God) through... shooting, in addition to conspiracy and collusion against national security."
On its part, the "Mizan Online" website, affiliated with the judiciary, reported that he was also convicted of crimes unrelated to the protests, including "fraud, threats, theft, and possession and carrying of illegal military weapons."
Other charges included "collusion in a kidnapping operation, brandishing a weapon for intimidation, and causing intentional bodily harm."
The website noted that Jamshidi was an "activist" during the protests in December of last year.
During these protests, Iranian authorities announced that more than three thousand people were killed, most of them security personnel, attributing the violence to "terrorist acts" orchestrated by the United States and Israel, while non-governmental organizations based outside Iran assert that security forces opened fire on protesters, indicating that thousands were killed.
Iran executed at least 1,639 people in 2025, the highest annual toll since 1989, according to the organizations "Human Rights in Iran" and "Together Against the Death Penalty."
According to Amnesty International, Iran ranks second in the world in terms of the number of executions, after China.
