First in Two Months.. The U.S. Military Launches a Fatal Strike on a Ship Suspected of Drug Trafficking

- The U.S. military said early Monday that it carried out a strike targeting a boat suspected of being involved in drug trafficking in the eastern Pacific, marking the first known strike in more than two months. The U.S. Southern Command (SOUTHCOM) stated in a message on the platform "X" (formerly Twitter) that "the Joint Task Force in the Western Hemisphere conducted a lethal strike targeting a low-profile vessel that was operating along known drug trafficking routes in the eastern Pacific."

Two people were killed as a result of the strike that was carried out on Sunday, according to the southern command. This strike is the first of its kind since June 21, and the reason for the halt of strikes in the Caribbean and the eastern Pacific remains unclear, according to the Afaaq News Network.

Before the halt, the U.S. military destroyed at least 67 ships and killed at least 221 people since the launch of the "Southern Spear Operation" in September 2025, according to official data and an analysis conducted by the Afaq News Network on search and rescue efforts. The U.S. administration informed Congress that the United States is engaged in an "armed conflict" against drug cartels, classifying the dead as "unlawful combatants," and claimed it has the authority to carry out lethal strikes without judicial review, based on a secret decision issued by the Department of Justice.

While officials in law enforcement and experts expressed their doubts about the effectiveness of the Trump administration's strategy and its ability to bring about a tangible change in drug trafficking in the region. The commander of the Southern Command, General Francis L.

Donovan, in a statement on Monday, affirmed the U.S. military's commitment to combating drug trafficking, saying: "We are committed to applying comprehensive pressure on drug terrorists by disrupting their operations, dismantling their leadership, and eliminating cartel terrorism throughout the region." He added in the post: "This operation represents strong evidence of our lethal capabilities, overwhelming power, and steadfast determination to protect the American homeland."
