The Houthi militia, supported by the Iranian regime, escalated its attacks on civilian facilities in Yemen, targeting Aden International and Al-Rayyan airports in the city of Mukalla with ballistic missiles and drones, in an escalation that threatens the safety of air navigation and puts the lives of travelers and workers at risk.
The targeting of Al-Rayyan Airport, on Wednesday, came hours after an attack on the vicinity of the runway at Aden International Airport, in a development that expands the circle of threats affecting air ports operating in Yemeni government areas, and raises fears of intentional disruption of travel and undermining Yemen’s remaining ports of communication with the outside world.

The Yemeni Ministry of Transport confirmed, in a statement, that Aden International Airport was targeted for the fourth time, while Al-Rayyan International Airport was targeted by three drones, all of which fell near the runways of the two airports at a time when civil aviation traffic was witnessing the landing and take-off of a number of flights.
The statement explained that the attack on Aden coincided with the movement of civilian and humanitarian flights, which included the take-off of two civilian aircraft and the landing of a plane linked to humanitarian missions, which reveals the extent of the risks posed by attacks on airports during operating times.

The targeting also coincided with two Yemeni Airlines flights preparing to take off towards Addis Ababa, and the company’s flight to Cairo, where the two flights were stopped and postponed, and the airport was evacuated of passengers and workers to preserve their lives and safety, in an emergency measure imposed by the seriousness of the situation, according to the statement.
The Yemeni Ministry of Transport condemned the attacks and called on the United Nations, the international community and the International Civil Aviation Organization to take practical measures to protect civilian airports, ensure that attacks are not repeated, and hold accountable those responsible for endangering the lives of civilians and the safety of air navigation.
