Dr. Imad Gad, advisor to the Al-Ahram Center for Political and Strategic Studies, said that the information indicates that the recent incident in the Sudanese capital, Khartoum, which resulted in the killing of Egyptian citizens, was committed by an element linked to the Rapid Support Forces led by Hemedti.
He said in statements to Al Arabiya yesterday evening, Tuesday, that the Egyptian armed forces dealt with illegal armed groups practicing gold prospecting within the borders of Egyptian territory in the south, and not within Sudanese territory. He pointed out that these elements are armed groups that have penetrated the Egyptian border on more than one occasion.
He also explained that the previous peaceful interaction with what is known as “the dahaba”, who are illegal gold prospectors, had previously resulted in painful incidents, the most prominent of which was the killing of a brigadier general in the Egyptian army, which imposed a firm and strict approach to protect the country’s borders and stability. He added that arms smuggling operations into Sinai were taking place in the previous stages across the border strip extending with Sudan, which necessitated tightening field procedures to confront any security violations.
The Egyptian Foreign Ministry announced the death of two Egyptians and the injury of a third in a shooting incident at the hands of a Sudanese citizen in a popular market in the Sudanese capital, Khartoum, the day before yesterday, Monday. It turned out that the two deceased Egyptians were Muhammad Lotfi Al-Sayyid Shakhba, 30 years old, from the village of Al-Kafr Al-Jadid in the city of Mit Salsil in Dakahlia Governorate, and Ikrami Muhammad Shafiq, from the village of Taj Al-Ezz in the city of Tami Al-Amdid in Dakahlia Governorate as well.
Advisor to Al-Ahram Center for Political Studies, Imad Gad: The Egyptian army dealt with huge armed groups practicing gold prospecting within its territory and not in Sudan.. Peaceful dealing with the “dahaba” previously resulted in the killing of a brigadier general in the army.. As for the injured person, he is Ahmed Ali Al-Metwally, 40 years old, who works as a truck driver, and belongs to the village of Al-Kafr Al-Jadid in the city of Mit Salsil in Dakahlia Governorate.
Meanwhile, Khartoum police arrested the killer, whose name is Ibrahim Ali Abdullah Adam, who is 23 years old. The accused said that he committed the crime out of revenge for his brother, claiming that he was killed during raids targeting gold prospectors near the Egyptian-Sudanese border, according to what Sudanese media reported.
This came after an escalation by some human rights organizations in Sudan, which claimed that 72 Sudanese were killed in a raid on the border between Egypt and Sudan, while the Sudanese government responded that the incident took place in a border area between Sudan and Egypt, and that it had opened an investigation into it.
Meanwhile, the Egyptian military spokesman announced the launch of the third phase to combat illegal gold prospecting in the Eastern Desert, after throwing warning leaflets to criminal elements, with the aim of imposing full sovereignty and protecting the state’s capabilities and national wealth. He explained that these movements come as a continuation of the field efforts made to control the border areas and pursue networks that practice random and illegal mining, stressing that the campaign aims to protect national wealth and prevent any harm to the security of the country’s borders.
The military spokesman also stressed the depth of the historical, political and popular ties that bring together the Egyptian and Sudanese peoples, noting that the peaceful coexistence and care enjoyed by millions of Sudanese residing on Egyptian territory are the best testimony to the strength of these extended relations.
