Yesterday evening, Sunday, the Cairo Economic Court ruled to punish Mohamed Waziri, the former business manager of the Lebanese artist Haifa Wehbe, with three years in prison and fined him 16 million pounds (300 thousand US dollars), in the case in which he is accused of money laundering, in a new development in the legal dispute that brought together the two parties.

The ruling came after Waziri was referred to criminal trial before the Economic Court, against the backdrop of charges related to money laundering, according to press reports about the case.

The defendant's defense had maintained his innocence during the hearing of the case, based on the lack of elements of the crime of money laundering. It also requested that adjudication thereof be postponed until the legal position of the cassation appeal related to the ruling issued in the original case became clear.

The roots of the dispute go back to a report filed by Haifa Wehbe against her former business manager, in which she accused him of seizing money belonging to her and transferring it to his personal account, taking advantage of the official power of attorney issued to him, according to what was reported in reports about the case.

Judicial rulings had previously been issued in cases related to the conflict, including a prison sentence in a waste case, while the prison sentence issued in a fraud charge was cancelled, according to published coverage.

The new ruling brings the issue back into the spotlight, in light of the continued follow-up of legal developments in the dispute between the Lebanese artist and her former manager.
