Tehran - Afaq News - The Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned the British ambassador to Tehran, Hugo Shorter, following British accusations of Iran's involvement in the security incident that occurred near RAF Fairford in Britain, which is used by American forces.
According to the official Iranian news agency 'IRNA', the Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister for Political Affairs informed the British ambassador of Tehran's strong protest against what he described as the 'ongoing destructive approach' of the British government towards Iran.
The Iranian official accused London of launching a 'propaganda campaign' that includes baseless accusations, stating that these accusations 'cannot in any way obscure Britain's involvement in the military aggression against the Iranian people.'
The summoning comes after statements from British Prime Minister Andy Burnham, who said there are 'strong indications' that Iran played a role in the Fairford incident, while confirming that the British investigation is still ongoing and complex.
British police had arrested five Britons near the base after spotting suspicious vehicles, before releasing them on bail. The counter-terrorism police later stated that they did not find explosives inside the vehicles, but did find a quantity of gasoline, confirming that the investigation is ongoing.
Tehran denies any involvement in the incident, while British authorities have not yet announced the details of the evidence on which they base their accusations against Iran.
