Pakistan on Monday urged the Afghan Taliban government to prevent militants from using Afghan territory to launch attacks inside Pakistan, renewing its warning that the same militant groups may ultimately threaten the Taliban's rule itself.
Tensions have escalated between the two neighbors amid frequent border clashes and Pakistani air strikes in Afghanistan, deepening a long-standing dispute over militant activity.
The United Nations mission in Afghanistan said last September that it had documented more than 1,100 deaths and injuries among civilians due to cross-border violence in Afghanistan this year.
Pakistani Foreign Minister Muhammad Ishaq Dar said, in a speech he delivered at a research center and broadcast on Pakistani television, that he had previously issued a warning to the Prime Minister of the Taliban government in Afghanistan, Mullah Muhammad Hassan Akhund, during a visit to Kabul in July 2025.
“I gently reminded him that if the Afghan authorities fail to take appropriate action against terrorist groups operating from their territory, the day will come when these groups will threaten his government as well,” Ishaq Dar added.
He did not provide details about Afghanistan's response, and there was no immediate comment from Kabul.
Ishaq Dar warned that the Afghan Taliban regime would eventually face consequences if it did not take action against "terrorists" operating from its territory.
The Pakistani Geo news channel quoted Dar as saying, during a speech he delivered on “The Evolution of the Terrorist Scene in Pakistan” at the International Conference of the Institute of Strategic and International Studies held in Islamabad: “If the Afghan government does not take action against terrorists, it will face the consequences itself one day.”
It is noteworthy that Pakistan has recorded a sharp increase in the number of "cross-border terrorist incidents", especially in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan, since the return of the Afghan Taliban to power in 2021, according to the "Geo" channel.
