Russian President Vladimir Putin expected that the situation in the Middle East would develop positively, stressing at the same time that Moscow is implementing its obligations in joint projects with Tehran.

This came during a meeting between Putin and his Iranian counterpart, Masoud Pezeshkian, in the Russian capital, Moscow, on Tuesday, on the sidelines of the eighth summit of the Gas Exporting Countries Forum.

During the meeting, Putin said that he discussed the situation in the region face to face with the Iranian president, stressing that his country seeks to achieve common interests with Iran and fully implements its obligations within the framework of joint projects between the two countries.

He also pointed out the continuation of work on the Bushehr nuclear power plant construction project, pointing out that the volume of trade exchange between the two countries recorded a growth of 10.4% during the first eight months of this year.

On the other hand, Pezeshkian expressed his gratitude to Russia for the support it provides to Iran, praising the level of cooperation between the two countries in the political, security and economic fields, and the upward trend in bilateral trade exchange.

The Iranian President considered that what he described as “unilateral American moves in the region” demonstrated, more than ever before, the necessity of strengthening multilateralism and expanding cooperation between the countries subject to sanctions. He added that the countries of the region possess the necessary capacity and will to address challenges and resolve them at the regional level, without relying on the United States.

Pezeshkian pointed out that "the common will between the countries of the region provides opportunities to develop relations in multiple fields, including science, economy, industry, culture, security and military affairs."

While the Iranian presidency stated that Pezeshkian and Putin discussed enhancing cooperation in the oil, gas and energy sector and increasing economic exchanges.

The Russian-Iranian discussions came in light of continued coordination between Moscow and Tehran on political, economic and regional files, and the two countries’ efforts to expand bilateral cooperation in the face of Western pressures and sanctions imposed on them.

Note that relations between the two countries are gaining additional importance in light of the repercussions of the war related to Iran, and the diplomatic efforts aimed at containing the escalation in the Middle East.

It is noteworthy that Moscow had confirmed its readiness to help reach a settlement to the conflict, while Tehran stressed the need to address regional crises through political and diplomatic paths.
