Rubio Warns Europe of a 'Turning Point' and Attacks Violations of National Sovereignty

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio warned Europe that the world stands at a "turning point," calling for the rebuilding of Western institutions and alliances to confront what he described as new and increasing threats.

Rubio said: "We choose to unapologetically pursue national strength, regain control over vital supply chains, bring manufacturing back to our economy, rebuild our defenses, and fight for dominance in the technologies and industries that will shape the future."

Rubio addressed several points of tension between the United States and Europe, praising the recent agreement between the United States, Denmark, and Greenland, describing it as an "agreement that will reshape the Arctic region and enhance the security of all NATO member countries."

Rubio also linked his vision for the future of Europe to his campaign against the International Criminal Court, which he previously accused of infringing on American sovereignty.

He said: "There is competition among the great powers again. There are vulnerabilities, aggression, and terrorism, and a whole world of new threats and attacks once more. Therefore, we must rebuild our institutions and alliances to face these threats together, with the understanding that the purpose of these institutions and alliances is not to eliminate the sovereignty of the states that comprise them, but rather to defend it."

Rubio's statements come at a time when U.S.-European relations are experiencing increasing discussions about security, energy, and national sovereignty.

Greece occupies a pivotal position in U.S. plans to export liquefied natural gas to Europe.

However, these plans have faced scrutiny in Washington after reports indicated that the U.S. ambassador to Greece, Kimberly Guilfoyle, hinted to Greek Energy Minister Stavros Papastavrou that Washington caused the collapse of the Romanian government and is capable of doing the same in Athens.

Guilfoyle was quoted saying: "We can do this with any country we want," before adding: "We can do this here."

Democratic Senator Jeanne Shaheen, a senior member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, demanded Rubio on Tuesday to provide answers regarding Guilfoyle's behavior, as did Gregory Meeks, the senior Democratic member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee.

When Rubio was asked about the allegations against Guilfoyle during a separate appearance in Greece, he said: "Our embassy here is doing a great job, and our ambassador is a strong ambassador here."
