A Russian drone struck a bridge in the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv, on Sunday, coinciding with a visit by German Chancellor Friedrich Merz to the city to show support for Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. Video footage showed the moment the "Northern Bridge" in the city was hit, resulting in massive flames and thick black smoke, while cars were still crossing it, and no reports of injuries have been received so far.
Russia is escalating its campaign against the Ukrainian capital, marking the second time the Northern Bridge has been bombed in two days. This visit comes as Merz arrived in Kyiv accompanied by Minister of Economic Affairs and Energy, Katarina Reiche, despite Russian warnings issued on Saturday that foreign visitors and dignitaries in the Ukrainian capital are not safe amid ongoing Russian attacks.
Merz wrote on the platform "X" on Saturday: "Ukraine is facing critical weeks; that is why I traveled to Kyiv today carrying a message: You can count on us."
