Severe Storm Hits East America, Causing Power Outages and Disrupting Thousands of Flights

Washington - Afaq News - The powerful "Nor'easter" storm struck the northeastern United States, causing power outages for tens of thousands of homes and facilities, in addition to the cancellation of hundreds of flights and delays for thousands more, while American media reported the death of one person due to the storm.

Reuters reported that more than 100,000 power outages were recorded on Saturday in the states of Connecticut, New York, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey, while more than 73,000 homes and commercial establishments remained without electricity later on.

American media reported the death of a 56-year-old man in Brooklyn after a tree fell on him due to the strong winds.

The affected areas included major cities, including New York, Boston, and Philadelphia, amid warnings of flooding, road closures, and strong winds.

The American National Weather Service stated that the storm would cause heavy rains, strong winds, tidal waves, and currents in the Mid-Atlantic and New England regions, with its effects expected to continue until tomorrow, Monday.

The authority also warned of significant coastal flooding during the upcoming high tide cycles, coinciding with the full moon over the weekend.

New York Governor Kathy Hochul stated that the storm is heading towards the coastal areas of New York City and Long Island, warning that approaching the waters during the storm poses a danger to life.

Governors of New York and New Jersey declared a state of emergency in the counties expected to experience the worst effects of the storm, while the emergency operations center in Connecticut was activated.

The flight tracking website FlightAware reported the cancellation of about 445 flights to and from U.S. airports, along with the delay of 3,016 other flights.

130 flights were canceled at Logan Airport in Boston alone, while major airlines, including JetBlue, United, and American Airlines, issued alerts allowing travelers to modify their bookings without additional fees.

The severity of the winds prompted the United Nations to urge media outlets participating in the coverage of the UN General Assembly meetings to remove broadcasting equipment from the vicinity of the organization's headquarters in New York.

Several cultural and musical events were also canceled in New York and Maryland, and a concert by the band "AC/DC" in New Jersey was postponed.

"Nor'easter" storms are known weather phenomena on the East Coast of the United States, occurring frequently between autumn and early spring, often accompanied by heavy rain or snow and strong winds.
