- US President Donald Trump held Democrats responsible for the heavy sell-off in the stock market on Thursday, which came in the wake of the party's gains in the midterm elections. Trump wrote in a post on his platform, Truth Social: “The stock market had one of its worst days in history based on the election results. It is very sad. It took a tremendous effort to get us to an unprecedented level, and then this happened.
As a result, the value of your retirement accounts went down,” he asserted that “the market will recover” under his leadership. Trump added: “Remember, it wasn’t the Republicans that caused it, it was the stupid Democrats, but don’t worry; One way or another, we will soon be back, bigger and stronger than ever.”
The Nasdaq Composite Index, which includes major technology companies, fell by 5.52%, as investors assessed whether the gains of Democrats in the midterm elections might lead to a slowdown in the significant expansion of data centers - the primary driver of growth in the technology sector, which in turn contributed to driving the American economy as a whole. The Nasdaq index ended today’s trading in the “correction” range, falling by more than 10% from the highest record level it recorded on October 6.
The selling wave extended to include the market as a whole. The S&P and Dow Jones indices also recorded their worst daily performance since April 2025.
