The security administration of the temporary Yemeni capital, Aden, said on Friday evening that two missiles fired by the Houthi militia fell inside the campus of Aden International Airport, in the second incident of its kind in less than a week.
The administration added, in a statement, that preliminary information indicates that there were no human casualties, while the competent authorities are continuing their procedures to investigate the incident.
The Aden Security Administration warned of the dangers of targeting civilian facilities to the safety of travelers, workers, and air traffic, calling on the United Nations, international organizations, and authorities concerned with civil aviation to take a stance on these incidents and work to ensure the safety of air navigation.
For his part, the Yemeni Minister of Information, Muammar Al-Eryani, said that a Yemeni Airlines flight was preparing to take off for Cairo at the moment Aden Airport was targeted, while the Yemeni Minister of Transport, Mohsen Al-Omari, confirmed that the Houthi bombing coincided with the presence of civil aviation flights, and that the two missiles that targeted the airport fell 500 meters from one of the planes.
The Minister of Transport added that Aden Airport serves all regions of Yemen, including areas under the control of the Houthis, considering that the goal of the bombing is to “terrorize civilians,” and that targeting civilian objects is “not new” for the Houthis.
On October 7, the Houthi militia targeted Aden Airport using two ballistic missiles and explosive drones, coinciding with a civilian flight approaching to land at the airport, and the presence of planes, passengers, and workers, which put their lives in danger and threatened the safety of air navigation.
The Yemeni government considered that targeting the airport, which serves travelers from various Yemeni governorates, represents a dangerous escalation and a violation of international humanitarian law and international rules related to the protection of civil aviation. She referred to previous attacks on Aden Airport, including an attack that occurred in December 2020, coinciding with the government’s arrival in the city.
