- Michael Gosling recently discovered that Michael McDonald, the lead singer of the band "The Doobie Brothers," is his biological father. He recalls how, at the age of eight, he enjoyed the band's tunes and interacted with their music.
In a recent interview, he said: "I was a huge fan of The Doobie Brothers, and people still remember me singing along to the song China Grove, listening to their works in the old days. I have always been passionate about music, and now things are becoming clearer and gaining new meaning."
Gosling could hardly believe it since he learned a year ago that he was the result of a teenage relationship between McDonald and a woman only referred to by her first name, "Diane"; both were fourteen years old when they discovered they were expecting a child. Gosling recounted: "At first, they thought about getting married and trying to manage things and relying on the support of their families.
But in the end, the parents had other ideas, and it was collectively decided to put him up for adoption through a Catholic charity organization." He was adopted by a couple, Paul and Kay Gosling, and lived a happy and ideal childhood in Missouri, where he was loved and grew up among siblings.
Going back about 15 years, Gosling - as an adopted son - registered with the genetic testing company "23andMe" to try to find out if there were any health issues he might have inherited from his biological parents, especially since he was about to become a father. All the test results came back normal, and Gosling thought about closing his file with the company, but he said he felt an inner instinct pushing him to keep the file active.
Fortunately, he did; Dylan, the son of Michael McDonald and his wife Amy Holland, was able to use the same site a year earlier to find Gosling and connect with him, according to Gosling. Gosling said he learned that Dylan and his sister Scarlett were aware of the existence of a half-brother somewhere, and they also knew that their father had never given up on the desire to meet the son who was put up for adoption.
He explained what happened to him, saying: "He found me right away, and I received an email saying: Michael Gosling, St. Louis, Missouri, half-brother." He first contacted his biological mother, then McDonald.
Gosling has always been a huge fan of McDonald, both in his career with The Doobie Brothers and as a solo artist, and he even attended some of his concerts over the years. He said: "I’m still trying to wrap my head around the whole thing.
Even a year later, I still wake up, and the first thing that comes to my mind is that I’m waking up from a really crazy dream... that feeling still lingers with me to this day."
McDonald stated to WSMV, Channel 4 in Nashville, Tennessee, affiliated with the Horizon News Network, that he had carried a sense of guilt about the adoption issue for years before finally reaching out to Gosling in 2025. He added: "But just knowing that he is okay, and that he has lived a good life...
"Life, I certainly wouldn't have been able to provide it for him at that stage of my life, was a tremendous reward." Both the father and son feel overwhelming happiness that they share the same name, despite the fact that Gosling did not have a name at the time of the closed adoption proceedings, and his adoptive parents had no idea about the names of his biological parents.
Gosling currently lives in a state of happiness and pride in his relationship with his biological parents, praising them and describing them as wonderful people. He wishes that his father, "Paul," were still alive to witness the large and beautiful extended family they have formed together. Alongside McDonald's talent, Gosling noted that he found in him someone who possesses humor, intelligence, and kindness, explaining that they share the same passion for supporting adoption causes; this is one of the reasons they are happy to talk about it publicly now, hoping that the attention on their story will shed light on this issue.
They also share a love for music, as Gosling plays a bit of guitar and sings as well. When asked about the level of his singing performance, he laughed, pointing out that his voice is completely different from McDonald's voice, and he joked, "I didn't inherit that voice...
