A Rescue Axe Turned into a Weapon in the Flydubai Cockpit.. A Small Tool Behind the Most Dangerous Moments of Terror

In the cockpit of the aircraft, there are tools that usually do not attract the attention of passengers, but they exist for one reason: to save lives when things go wrong. Among them is the emergency axe, or what is known as the 'Crash Axe', which is a tool designated for exceptional uses in emergencies, such as helping to open parts of the aircraft when there is a need to escape or reach a fire. However, on Flydubai flight FZ1073, the function of this tool took a shocking turn, as the most ordinary piece in the cockpit became one of the strangest details of this flight.

According to what the UAE Public Prosecution announced today, Saturday, the investigation revealed that the co-pilot began to carry out what the authorities described as an 'act of terrorism' during the flight, attacking the pilot inside the cockpit using the emergency axe, before attempting to seize control of the aircraft. The prosecution confirmed that the investigation is still ongoing to determine all circumstances, motives, and potential links, in addition to examining physical and digital evidence.

Here, the most bizarre paradox of the story emerges: the tool that was placed in the cockpit to confront a potential disaster became part of the disaster itself. The axe is not a weapon designated for the aircraft, but rather a piece of emergency equipment carried for safety-related purposes. Aviation sources explain that its presence in the cockpit is related to the need to deal with some exceptional cases, such as opening a window or panel to access a location or exit the aircraft.

The seriousness of what happened was not theoretical. The aircraft experienced a very sharp descent during the incident, and according to flight tracking data reviewed by Reuters, the aircraft lost more than 16,000 feet in just over 30 seconds during one phase of the sudden descent. It then emitted emergency signals and changed its course before making an emergency landing in the city of Tabuk, Saudi Arabia.

The scene inside the plane was completely different from any typical emergency situation according to the circulating narrative. The injured captain was able to open the cockpit door, allowing passengers and others on board to intervene and subdue the co-pilot. According to reports relayed by Reuters, among those on the flight were off-duty pilots who later helped regain control of the plane and land it.

The plane was carrying 182 people according to the Associated Press, which reported that passengers and others intervened and managed to subdue the co-pilot before the plane made an emergency landing in Saudi Arabia.

The new developments add another layer to the story. Informed sources identified the co-pilot as Hamam Al-Hamami, an Omani national, while the Associated Press "AP" stated that informed sources reported he had previously been banned from flying with Oman Air due to concerns related to his extremist views, before later taking a position with Flydubai. This information is still part of the investigation and is not a final judgment on his motives or background.

The Emirati authorities have not yet announced the final picture of the case. The prosecution stated that the investigation is ongoing to uncover the circumstances and motives, as well as any potential links, alongside the analysis of physical and digital evidence.
