After nearly eight hours of discussions in New York, U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Pisent announced progress with China regarding trade, artificial intelligence, and other strategic issues, as both sides seek to ease tensions ahead of an anticipated summit between U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping.
Pisent stated to reporters after his meeting with Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng on Sunday that the talks with Chinese officials were "very successful," noting that both sides agreed to enhance communication regarding the risks associated with artificial intelligence.
Additionally, Pisent mentioned that Washington proposed establishing a mutual notification mechanism between the two countries regarding incidents, including security threats related to artificial intelligence, adding: "What we discussed is the establishment of a mechanism that will be called (U.S.-China Dialogue on Artificial Intelligence)," noting that both sides "agreed to hold further meetings."
U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer participated in the meetings, where he emphasized that "it is extremely important that we are able to work together."
The headquarters of JPMorgan Chase in New York hosted the meetings, and Bessent held a bilateral meeting with the Chinese Vice Premier on the sidelines of the discussions.
Washington and Beijing are seeking to address several trade and technology issues, including the possibility of extending the trade truce, establishing regulatory controls for the development of artificial intelligence, and ensuring the continued flow of metals to U.S. factories.
China had previously pledged during earlier negotiations to purchase American agricultural goods, while U.S. officials may use the meetings to follow up on these commitments and scrutinize them. AFP reported that a source familiar with the discussions indicated that working group meetings could continue until Monday.
These discussions came ahead of the anticipated summit on Thursday in Washington between Trump and Xi, amid efforts from both sides to manage trade and technology disputes and avoid a new escalation in bilateral relations.
