Arrest of American Soldier in Japan on Suspicion of Committing Murder

- The local police informed the Afaaq News network that a U.S. Marine was arrested on Sunday on suspicion of committing murder and theft after a woman's body was found in a hotel room in Japan. Okinawa police reported that a 39-year-old woman was found unconscious in her hotel room in Naha City on Okinawa Island, and she was pronounced dead at the scene early Saturday.

The police also announced to the Afaaq News network that due to the condition of the woman's body, it appears she was murdered, but they did not provide further details. The police added that a 20-year-old Marine stationed at the Futenma Air Base, located on the same island, was arrested.

The police indicated that surveillance camera footage showed a man - believed to be a foreigner with a shaved head - entering the hotel room with the woman, and then leaving the building later carrying her belongings. For its part, the U.S. Embassy in Tokyo stated via the platform 'X' that it is 'aware that a member of the U.S. Armed Forces is in custody following the death of a Japanese citizen in Okinawa.'

The embassy added: 'As investigations continue to determine the circumstances of the case, the United States is in communication and cooperating with the Japanese government and local authorities.' The Afaaq News network reached out to the U.S. Department of Defense (Pentagon) and the U.S. Marine Corps for comments.

The police stated that the woman's body was found around 4:30 AM local time on Saturday, and that the U.S. Marine was arrested less than 24 hours later at 1 AM local time while wandering in the city. The police said that investigations are still ongoing.
