From September 23 to 25, Xi visited the United States at Trump's invitation, in the first state visit by a Chinese president to Washington in more than a decade. During the discussions, Xi and Trump stressed the importance of transforming the understandings they reached into practical steps, while keeping cooperation at the forefront of the relationship, controlling competition, and managing differences. The discussions also touched on trade, artificial intelligence, and regional and international issues, including the Middle East, Ukraine, and the Korean Peninsula.

The two parties also agreed to support each other's hosting of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit and the G20 summit, within the framework of expanding areas of cooperation despite the continuing strategic differences between them, according to the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The Chinese army's statements reflect the extension of political understandings to the military track, especially with regard to continuing communication channels and reducing the risks of miscalculation in times of tension.
