Democracy: Postponing the elections for a year constitutes a leap in the air that threatens their cancellation

Ramallah - Ofoq News - The Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine emphasized a number of basic issues and positions. Since the call for elections was issued, it has repeatedly stressed the importance of holding a comprehensive national dialogue, with the participation of everyone, to discuss various issues related to the general elections, the conditions for holding them, and their political and national outcomes. It should constitute an entry point for rebuilding the Palestinian political system on democratic and participatory foundations, and formulating a joint national action program that defines the strategy of the national struggle in confronting the occupation, and protects the legitimate national rights of our people.

The Front also called for the need for all forces to participate in the preparatory committees supervising the electoral process for the National Council, to ensure national partnership, provide appropriate climates for the success of the elections, enhance confidence in their course and results, and ensure respect for the will of the voters.

The Democratic Front believes that postponing the elections for a year constitutes a leap in the air, threatening their cancellation, as happened in previous stages, especially in 2021. It considers that the continued vacuum in the institutions of the Palestinian political system, and the absence of comprehensive participation in decision-making, exacerbates the political and national crisis, deepens the division, and weakens the ability of our people to confront the challenges and risks that target their cause and national rights.

The Front renewed the call to hold an extraordinary session of the Central Council of the Palestine Liberation Organization, during which the accession of the Hamas and Islamic Jihad movements to the organization is approved, and their equitable representation in its membership, in accordance with agreed-upon national standards.

The Council shall elect an executive committee that embodies the national consensus, carry out its responsibilities as a unified leadership reference for the Palestinian people, and establish a binding system that regulates its meetings and decision-making mechanisms, and ensures the activation of the organization’s departments and institutions, and the commitment of all parties to its requirements, in a way that enhances the unity of the national decision and the effectiveness of the Palestinian representative institution.

The Front also called for the formation of a national consensus government that would enshrine the unity of political and legal jurisdiction over the West Bank, including Jerusalem, and the Gaza Strip, and return the unified national authority to its owners, represented by the Liberation Organization and the Palestinian Authority, in a way that blocks separation plans and any international guardianship that detracts from the independent national decision and pushes the Palestinian issue into the unknown.

The Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine concluded by emphasizing that getting out of the crisis requires responsible political will, true national consensus, and a comprehensive partnership that rebuilds institutions, renews their legitimacy, and unites national energies in confronting the occupation, in a way that fortifies the Palestinian national project and opens the way to freedom, independence, and the right of return.
