The Egyptian House of Representatives will hold an emergency general session today, Wednesday, chaired by Counselor Hisham Badawy, to discuss a draft law related to postponing the implementation of the new Criminal Procedure Law, which was scheduled to come into effect starting tomorrow, Thursday, October 1, 2026.
Informed Egyptian sources revealed to "Al Arabiya.net" and "Al Hadath.net" that the discussions will focus on the article concerning the start date of the law's enforcement, with a request to postpone its application for one year, rather than six months, without making other amendments to the law's articles.
According to the sources, the postponement request does not include a detailed reason in its text; however, the reason is related to completing the necessary technical and human preparations for implementing the law, including training employees and workers on the new work mechanisms, to ensure its provisions are executed without errors or problems.
The emergency session comes just hours before the scheduled start of the new law's implementation, while parliamentary sources indicated that the incomplete technological infrastructure necessary for applying some procedures is one of the reasons for the postponement request.
The Ministry of Justice announced last August its continued preparations to implement the new Criminal Procedure Law by equipping courtrooms, launching a remote litigation system, and training judges, lawyers, and session clerks on the new working mechanisms.
The new law, numbered 174 of 2025, has set October 1, 2026, as the date to start its implementation, replacing the Criminal Procedure Law issued by Law No. 150 of 1950. The law includes several updates in the criminal justice system and investigation and trial procedures, along with regulations related to notifications and modern litigation methods.
Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi called on the House of Representatives to hold an emergency session on Wednesday, one day before the scheduled opening of the new regular session of the council.
The General Secretariat of the House of Representatives announced that members were notified of the session to be held at 11:00 AM at the council's headquarters in the New Administrative Capital, while the notification sent to the deputies did not specify a particular reason for the meeting or the agenda for the session.
