Federal Reserve Member: Inflation Remains High Across All Aspects of the U.S. Economy

Neel Kashkari, the President of the Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis, said on Sunday that inflation rates are extremely high across all sectors of the economy, not just due to rising oil prices.

Kashkari added to Fox News, "Even if we exclude the energy sector, which is highly volatile, and exclude the food sector — which are both very important sectors — inflation is still extremely high in terms of the direction the economy is heading."

Kashkari supported the unanimous decision made last week to raise interest rates by a quarter percentage point to a range of 3.75% - 4.00%, according to Reuters.

Kashkari was one of three dissenting officials at the previous Federal Reserve meeting, where they supported raising interest rates while the majority of members of the Federal Open Market Committee chose to keep them unchanged.

Forecasts released with the decision to raise interest rates showed that all policymakers at the Federal Reserve, except for two, are likely to implement at least another quarter-point increase this year.

Futures markets for interest rates reflect a 66.7% probability that the Federal Reserve's benchmark interest rate will end 2026 in the range of 4.00-4.25%, with a strong likelihood of at least another quarter-point increase by mid-2027.

Crude oil prices surged sharply after the intensification of hostilities, as both the United States and Iran attacked and sank oil tankers in the Strait of Hormuz.

Kashkari stated that the Federal Reserve's mission is to bring inflation back to the central bank's target level of 2%, and there is nothing it can do regarding interest rates that would open the Strait of Hormuz or lower oil prices.

He added: "The inflation that the American people feel daily goes far beyond just oil prices. It is present in all aspects of the economy. It is widespread in the services sector, for example. So, we have tools to reduce it... We hope to get some help from other parts of the government or from other aspects of the real economy."
