France is working on preparing a draft resolution in the United Nations Security Council that supports freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, according to a UN diplomat.
The diplomat, who requested anonymity because discussions about the draft were held privately, stated that the resolution will reaffirm the necessity of respecting freedom of navigation in the strait, which is considered one of the hotspots in the war related to Iran, due to its importance for global shipping vital for food security and energy security, as reported by the Associated Press today, Saturday.
He also added that the draft resolution will emphasize the necessity of respecting maritime law and supporting peaceful initiatives aimed at ensuring safe passage through the strait.
The diplomat noted that U.S. President Donald Trump and French President Emmanuel Macron discussed this issue on the sidelines of the annual meetings of the United Nations General Assembly this week, and it was also discussed with Arab countries and with Iran as well.
This information comes amid American confirmation that Iranian forces do not control the vital strait, with American forces deployed around it and besieging Iranian ports.
Meanwhile, Tehran has presented a new plan to stop the conflict and return to negotiations, lasting 7 days, which could end with the opening of this vital corridor that has seen shipping movement almost completely paralyzed since the outbreak of war last February.
In contrast, informed American sources reported that Trump is skeptical about this plan and may reject it, with the possibility of returning to war after the upcoming midterm elections in November.
It is worth noting that since the outbreak of war, Hormuz has become a bargaining chip in the hands of Iran, which has escalated its threats to ships and demanded joint management of the strait while imposing tolls on tankers, but the Trump administration, along with several Western and Arab countries, rejected this.
