Here are amazing facts discovered about planet Earth in the year 2025

Dubai, United Arab Emirates - Billions of years ago, the Earth was just an inhospitable rock covered in magma. Scientists are still working to decipher the mystery of how it turned into a blue-green ball teeming with life.

But as science advances year after year, we learn more and more about the mysterious history of our planet. In the year 2025, scientists revealed strange phenomena, determined the age of the oldest known rock formation, discovered a thriving ecosystem nearly 9 kilometers below the ocean’s surface, and detected unexpected movement in the planet’s core.

Here are some of the ways scientific research is shaping our understanding of Earth in 2025. The planet's oldest rocks A rock outcrop in a remote corner of northern Quebec harbors the oldest known surviving fragments of Earth's crust, a study published in June suggests.

This discovery opens the door to further examination of the rock formation and any fossils it may contain, to shed light on an unknown chapter of Earth's history. These exposed remains of the ancient ocean floor, known as the Nuvvuagittuq outcrops, date back about 4.16 billion years, making them the only rock shown to date from the first of the four geological epochs in our planet's history, the Hadean Era.

This era began 4.6 billion years ago, when the world was thought to be hot, turbulent and hell-like, but scientists say it is possible that the newly dated rock formation retains fingerprints of life dating back to the hellish era. However, it is still unclear whether the Novoajitok outcrops will be widely accepted as Earth's oldest rocks, as this has been the subject of long-standing scientific debate.

The rock sample did not contain a hard mineral known as zircon, which is the easiest and most reliable way to date ancient rock formations, and little is decisive when dealing with rocks and minerals dating back more than 4 billion years. 'Microscopic lightning', moor glow, and the origins of life Bog glow - the mysterious glowing lights seen over centuries over peatlands, swamps and moors - has long sparked folklore, ghost stories, and even a funny British cartoon in the 1980s. Theories have included static electricity, insect swarms, birds carrying glowing fungi, or lightning igniting swamp gas.

The last hypothesis was not far from the truth, according to researchers who revealed a scientific explanation for this phenomenon. Their study, published last September, suggested that very small flashes of lightning ignite microscopic bubbles of methane gas.

However, this “microscopic lightning” does not come from the sky, but rather arises from electrically charged water bubbles that interact with methane to produce these flashes of light. Another study, published last March, found that microscopic lightning in the primordial mists may have ignited the chemical formation of the building blocks of life more than 3 billion years ago.

Variable Magnetic North Pole Unlike the geographic North Pole, which defines a fixed location where all lines of longitude curved around the Earth converge, the location of the magnetic North Pole is determined by the Earth's magnetic field, a field that is constantly in motion. Over the past few decades, the movement of the magnetic North Pole accelerated significantly, before rapidly slowing down starting in 2015.

Scientists cannot explain the reason behind this unusual behavior of the magnetic field. In 2025, scientists updated the Global Magnetic Model, which helps maintain the accuracy of global positioning systems such as those used on aircraft and ships, by resetting the official position of the magnetic North Pole and providing new predictions of its movement over the next five years.

Since its discovery in 1831, the magnetic North Pole has drifted away from Canada and toward Russia, sometimes quickly and sometimes slowly. In 1990, its movement accelerated, rising from 15 kilometers per year to 55 kilometers per year, Dr. Arno Chulia, a senior researcher at the University of Colorado at Boulder and the National Centers for Environmental Information of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, told Ofoq News in January.

Around 2015, the drift slowed to about 35 kilometers per year. Scientists expect the drift towards Russia to continue to slow, although there is some uncertainty about how long this slowdown will last.

The deepest known animal ecosystem Geochemist Mengran Du had 30 minutes left on her submarine watch to a deep ocean trench located between Russia and Alaska, when she began noticing what she described as “amazing organisms,” including various species of shellfish and tube worms that had never before been recorded at such extreme depths. Du and her team have found the deepest known ecosystem of organisms that use the chemical compound methane instead of sunlight to survive.

These organisms live at depths between 5,800 and 9,500 meters below the ocean surface, in an area known as the "deep benthic canyons". Scientists hypothesized that the microbes living in this ecosystem convert organic matter in the sediments into carbon dioxide, and then convert the carbon dioxide into methane, something the researchers did not know that microbes were capable of doing.

Bacteria that live inside shellfish and tube worms then use this methane in chemosynthesis to survive, Du said. The scientific publishing house “Nature” chose her as one of the ten people who shaped the most influential science in the year 2025.

The Mysterious Center of the Earth The remarkable discoveries of 2025 went deeper, reaching the deepest layers of the Earth, which is a layer consisting of a very hot solid metal ball, with a radius of about 1,221 kilometers, surrounded by an outer core of liquid metal. Direct observation of the Earth's core is impossible, so scientists usually study it by analyzing changes in the size and shape of seismic waves as they pass through the core.

In the year 2024, scientists confirmed that the Earth's inner core reversed the direction of its rotation, and in February 2025, the same team revealed changes in the shape of the inner core, with distortions in its most superficial levels. Gold is believed to be one of the metals that make up the Earth's core, and last May, a study based on a rock formation in Hawaii indicated that at least a small amount of gold had seeped to the Earth's surface.

This leak raises the interesting possibility that, if it continues, more of this precious metal may move from the Earth's center to the crust in the future.
