Dubai, United Arab Emirates - What could be more British than standing in a muddy tent at sunset on a chilly late summer evening? This was the atmosphere of the "Burberry" show in London on Monday, the standout event that always concludes the city's fashion week.
It is true that the mud was artificial, and the venue was in the gardens of Kensington Palace, but the brand evoked the spirit of famous British festivals in a night that combined music and fashion. "Burberry" had regained its place on the FTSE 100 index, which includes the largest companies on the London Stock Exchange, just hours before the show began, after a year of being off the list during a tough financial period, which truly deserved a celebration!
The event was an opportunity to showcase its strength and shake off the effects of the downturn it faced amid a global slowdown in the luxury goods market. After British artist Elton John arrived through a private entrance, the show kicked off to the sounds of the famous band Black Sabbath, featuring the late Ozzy Osbourne.
The models participating in the event presented designs inspired by music, ranging from tight-fitting mod-style suits to jackets with touches from the sixties, complete with fringes and leather pants. Raincoats had a prominent share as they are essential for any event, alongside short dresses knitted with crochet, paired with high shoes and thin scarves.
The collection seemed to offer an option for every weather condition. Creative director Daniel Lee joked with reporters backstage, saying that the team tried to make as many fabrics as possible water-resistant, including denim and woven raffia, adding that the "Burberry" show is all about water resistance..
What can we make resistant other than the trench coat?" This was Daniel Lee's sixth show with Burberry, and the third under the new CEO Joshua Schulman, an American businessman who has held positions at "Coach," "Jimmy Choo," and "Bergdorf Goodman" and joined the company last summer with a clear goal: to revive the brand.
His strategy focuses on adjusting prices and refocusing on the brand's core pieces, such as the classic trench coat and other coats, to enhance Burberry's image as a symbol of timeless British elegance. The show saw the attendance of prominent figures from British culture, including actresses Joanna Lumley and Jennifer Saunders, models Naomi Campbell and Twiggy, former footballer Ian Wright in the front row, and Anna Wintour with British tennis star Jack Draper, while young British singers Olivia Dean and Ray participated in the musical performance.
Several Arab celebrities also attended, including Lebanese fashion blogger Karen Wazen, Louay Alama, the son of Lebanese artist Ragheb Alama, and Saudi film producer and consultant for the Red Sea International Film Festival, Mohammed Turk.
