Dublin - Afaq News - The "Stop the Game" campaign has called on the players of the Irish national football team and their Icelandic coach Heimir Hallgrimsson to boycott the upcoming away match against Israel, scheduled for next Sunday, as part of the third round of the UEFA Nations League, in solidarity with Palestine.
The Irish Sun newspaper reported that the campaign sent a message to the coach and players, signed by a number of Irish league fans, urging them not to participate in the match set to take place in Serbia.
The campaign appealed to the players to stand with their teammates and the Irish people, considering that participating in the match contradicts the positions of the majority of citizens, citing opinion polls that it said showed more than 70% of Irish people opposed holding the two matches.
The message addressed Ireland's stance on the Israeli war on Gaza, noting that the Irish government supports the international legal path, and that Dublin shares with South Africa in the case brought before the International Court of Justice regarding allegations of genocide.
