German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed their belief that Russia is obligated to agree to a ceasefire with Ukraine, which includes the entire energy infrastructure in the two countries.
This came according to what was stated on Monday evening by German government spokesman Stefan Cornelius, following a phone call between Meretz and Zelensky.
Cornelius explained that Zelensky briefed the German Chancellor on "the intensified Russian air attacks that targeted civilian targets and energy infrastructure in Ukraine over the past weekend." He added that Meretz affirmed Germany's solidarity with Ukraine.
US President Donald Trump had previously claimed that both Ukraine and Russia would stop launching attacks on the other's energy sector. Zelensky expressed his openness to the proposal, but stressed that Russia has not responded to it yet.
Zelensky confirmed holding talks with Meretz and a number of senior foreign political officials, including NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte and Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk.
Zelensky said in a video message: “Everyone’s position is absolutely clear: they must support Ukraine, and not give Russia any opportunity to break Ukraine and Europe.”
Zelensky expressed his thanks for the support his country has already received, saying: “The most important thing is the presence of aid packages that contribute to strengthening our defense and protection.”
