Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian was quoted by official media as saying on Wednesday that the United States cannot expect a dialogue with Iran in light of its blockade and threats against the country, a day after the Pakistani Army Commander visited Tehran to discuss mediation efforts and regional developments.
Iranian media reported that Tehran informed Pakistani Army Commander Field Marshal Asim Munir on Tuesday that there would be no talks with Washington until its demands were met, in a hardening of its position despite mediation efforts made by Islamabad.
Pakistan is a major mediator between the United States and Iran. Its previous mediation efforts led to the signing of an interim peace agreement in June, but the “Islamabad Memorandum” quickly faltered as fighting renewed between Iran and the United States a few weeks after its signing.
The Iranian Nour News Agency said that President Pezeshkian discussed mediation efforts and developments in the region during a meeting in Tehran with Mounir.
Pezeshkian said: “The Americans must first lift the threats and sanctions, and then we can start dialogue” with them. He added, "Our people do not trust America today, and believe that if we negotiate, they will attack us again."
Mounir also met with the Speaker of the Iranian Parliament, Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf. An Iranian statement regarding the meeting indicated that the Iranian official confirmed that Washington will not be able to gain Tehran’s trust unless it meets the seven conditions it put forward last month to reopen the Strait of Hormuz.
