Poll: Half of Britons refuse to fight in defense of their country

Washington - Ofoq News - A new poll conducted by the Ipsos Institute revealed that about half of Britons refuse to fight in defense of their country under any circumstances, at a time when British fears are increasing about the possibility of a military confrontation breaking out between Russia and Europe, amid challenges facing the government in strengthening its defense capabilities.

The poll showed that only 36 percent of participants expressed their willingness to fight in defense of Britain, an indication of the gap between military readiness requirements and the positions of large sectors of public opinion.

The results came days after British Armed Forces Minister Alistair Carnes warned of the increasing risk of war in Europe, in light of tensions with Russia and escalating security threats facing the United Kingdom.

The poll revealed that Britons were divided regarding increasing military spending, as 51 percent of participants supported strengthening the defense budget, but this support declined when options related to financing the increase were presented.

44 percent expressed their opposition to raising defense spending if this required increasing personal taxes or reducing spending on public services.

The results reflect a challenge for the British government, which seeks to enhance the readiness of its armed forces to confront external threats, while avoiding imposing additional financial burdens on citizens or reducing basic services.

These positions come at a time when Britain is facing increasing security pressures, including fears of a military escalation with Russia, in addition to accusations of Iranian activities targeting British security.

These developments place the government before a difficult equation, which is providing the necessary resources to modernize military capabilities, while at the same time maintaining economic stability and spending on public services.
