Raghad Saddam Publishes a Document in Her Father's Handwriting Written from His Prison Cell and Comments on It

- Raghad Saddam Hussein, the daughter of the late Iraqi president Saddam Hussein, published a new document, which she said was written in his own handwriting from inside his prison on May 15, 2004. In it, he expressed his feelings towards the capital Baghdad and Iraq following the American invasion in 2003. Raghad commented on the document written by her father in a post on her official account on the platform "X" (formerly Twitter) on Sunday evening: "In the handwriting of the martyr leader Saddam Hussein from the prison, written in May 2004, he spoke about a homeland he had not seen since April 2003, and he kept asking about its wounds and its children, recalling the last image of Iraq before the separation, while his heart remained attached to beloved Baghdad."

The message, dated about a year after the fall of Baghdad in April 2003, shows what Saddam directed towards Iraq, questioning its conditions following the entry of foreign forces. The message ended with the signature "President Saddam Hussein from the prison - 15/5/2004," and he added that he "had not seen beloved Baghdad since he parted from it in April 2023."

Recently, Raghad Saddam published excerpts from some of her father's diaries in prison after the issuance of the execution decision. After his trial in Iraq, the sentence of execution for Saddam Hussein was carried out on the morning of Eid al-Adha on December 30, 2006, on charges of "committing crimes against humanity."

Saddam Hussein, who ruled Iraq from 1979 until his overthrow and arrest by U.S.-led coalition forces in 2003, was accused by an Iraqi court of committing numerous massacres during his rule. This included the Shiite massacre in 1982 in the town of Dujail and the "Halabja" massacre in 1988, where he was accused of using chemical weapons against a Kurdish town that had opposed him.
