The Saudi General Authority of Civil Aviation announced today, Monday, the extension of the suspension of operational operations at King Khalid International Airport in the capital, Riyadh, to complete procedures for verifying the safety of the airport facilities and their operational readiness in coordination with the competent authorities.
The decision comes after temporarily suspending operational operations, last Saturday, following an attack on the airport’s facilities, while the concerned authorities continue to assess the damage and take the necessary measures to ensure the safety of travelers and workers.
The authority’s recent announcement did not specify a date for the resumption of operations, at a time when the return of air traffic is linked to completing verification of the safety of the facilities and their readiness for operation.
The General Authority of Civil Aviation announced, on Saturday, October 10, that King Khalid International Airport was subjected to an attack during the afternoon hours, resulting in casualties, noting that the competent authorities had begun procedures to deal with the incident and assess the damage.
She explained at the time that suspending operational operations was a temporary measure aimed at completing the damage assessment and verifying the safety of the airport facilities, with developments to be announced later.
The attack came after two other incidents at the airport on October 8, one of which targeted airport facilities, while the other targeted a Saudi Airlines plane.
